As you can tell from the girl's expressions, it was just a wee bit windy on top of hills above the beach. Perfect albatross weather, though.
The picture above was taken at the very end of the peninsula, where there has been an albatross conservation center for many years. There are only two places in the world where albatross will nest on a large land mass, this point of land being one of them. They also nest on small, remote islands. They are a spectacular bird, with immense wing spans, and have a second joint in their wings so they will fold up properly next to their body. We took a one hour guided tour, and enjoyed it very much.
After returning to the hotel Rebecca and I went out to the airport to meet Claira and Scott, and they did arrive right on time.
So now the NZ gang is all here. Simon, Jessica, and Julian also arrived in the late afternoon. We enjoyed dinner with them at a nearby pizza joint. The weary travelers have gone to bed, and that's where I'm heading, too. All this fresh air makes for good sleeping. And, oh yes, the weather has cleared up, it's turned warmer, and there were even a few people swimming out in the ocean. Yes, they were young people, who obviously don't know any better! Jim

yay! so glad the gang is all there...and that the weather has improved! will be praying for continued sunshine and warmer temps as you get ready to "ride"! (and maybe a little less wind, susan?!!)
ReplyDeleteHi Renee. Thanks for the kind thoughts. It's just after 1:00 pm here, and there is mixed sunshine and clouds. Pretty breezy, too, but I went with Rebecca and Susan to do a few loads of laundry, and who cares how hard the wind is blowing when you do laundry? ;-) Claira and Scott are with the rest of the gang out at the Albatross Center, and I bet the wind out on that headland will be strong indeed. Jim
DeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteYou are a GREAT writer!!!!! Reading your blog gives us a great "feel" of where you are. We adore the mixture of history, biology and family lore. It is amazing when you realize how far you are but yet you can find commonality with people all over the world-Susan's quilt show experience for example. We hope the weather continues to improve. We think that other people will be joining you and hope you find them good company-or do you already know them?
Every day we look forward to your entries; it is so much fun!
Lots of love,
Iris, Steve and Emma
Good morning Halperns. Glad you are enjoying the posts! With your encouragement maybe I'll look into writing when I get older HA HA! I'm already older than dirt!! We met one of our fellow bikers in the lobby before dinner last night. She had flown here from Belgium and has been traveling for 37 hours!!! I understand she is an attorney that works in both Belgium and Philadelphia. We haven't had a chance to get acquainted yet, as she had one objective after arriving: getting a shower and going to bed. Simon is picking up another rider this morning and we'll be meeting her when we go down for breakfast in a few minutes. Simon has never met her before, either. One other rider had to cancel out, so there will be just 8 paying customers, all of whom will be female except Scott and me! Eat your heart out, Steve!!
ReplyDeleteSteve had a good chuckle as I read your recent post. The sunrise was amazing! We trust by now you have met your other riders or will soon. Women deciding to go on a bike trip and take a chance on their fellow bike riders are bound to be interesting! Every time I open my computer, I check for your latest news. Please - do not feel any pressure; this is a time for you to enjoy every moment!
ReplyDeleteAs far as our "journey" here, we are hoping the fans will be removed tomorrow; they make a great deal of noise!
Lots of love,
Iris
Snyders:
ReplyDeleteGuess you've been out of touch and haven't been able to Blog since we've heard nothing since the 4th of March from you. Check your blog page each evening.
